I am a Polish gangster. My name is Szczepan and I live in the east of my country, near the Ukrainian border. The atmosphere was always oppressive to me, but you know what? That’s how they make movies like this!
The “how i fell in love with a gangster trailer” is a Polish gangster epic from the last century. The movie is about an innocent woman who falls in love with a gangster and the struggles that they go through together.
REVIEW – This three-hour film chronicles the rise of a real-life Polish gangster legend from lowly crook to powerful mafia leader during the socialist era. Although the violence and shoot-outs are not typical of this picture, and it is not on par with Martin Scorsese’s greatest, this Eastern European film is intriguing in many ways, especially for us.
The first big Netflix film of 2022 begins with a powerful opening sequence that sets the tone for a “epic, horrible, relentless, rollercoaster-like gangster movie.” While “Big in Japan” plays in the background, a lady rests in a bathtub filled with blood. So we come to filmmaker Maciej Kawulski’s sweeping story of real-life Polish mobster Nikodem “Nikos” Skotarczak’s rise and collapse, How I Fell in Love with a Gangster.
“You’re a mobster when you wake up!” (A Gangster Film by György Szomjas)
The apparently rather misleadingly named Polish gangster epic opens when Nikos (Tomasz Wlosok) is a baby and is experiencing his life-changing Henry Hill moment from The Big Men, “I always wanted to be a gangster.” He becomes engaged in similar, lesser scams as a youngster until, as an adult, he creates an empire and becomes one of Europe’s most dangerous names: stealing and selling German vehicles in Poland. Nikos realizes his true love is defrauding others after seeing a guy manipulate the cash to defraud people. After that, the rest is history.
The true tale of Skotarczak is undoubtedly compelling. However, a gangster film director’s primary challenge is how to toss the ball about the innumerable masterpieces – particularly when we’re talking about Eastern Europe rather than Hollywood. Of all, there’s never a boring moment in a gangster film, which is why there are so many of them, and so many excellent ones. While it may seem that this would make the director’s work easier, it really makes it more difficult. The fact is that, with a little thought, I could name approximately 30 gangster movies that most people are familiar with or have heard of. Not to mention that The Godfather, Godfellas, Pulp Fiction, and Once Upon a Time in America, to name a few, are among the finest films ever made. So, rather than following in the footsteps of the greats, the challenge is how to forge new roads.
Character depictions and Hollywood twists and turns
The narrative of How I Fell in Love with a Gangster isn’t especially original in many aspects, but that’s not always a bad thing. Despite the film’s odd Eastern European plot and ambiance, as well as its stranger-than-fiction story, Kawulski is unable to solve this enigma. Nikos (Tomasz Wosok) is a pleasant, good-looking, and very captivating young mobster who is highly imaginative in his genre and has an uncanny ability to seduce women. Of all, we’re dealing about plurality here, and women (particularly husbands) aren’t readily tolerated when it comes to Nikos’ misdeeds. As a result, the Godfellas-style marriage predicament is present in this picture. Of course, there are plenty of sex scenes in this film.
Although the aforementioned typical Eastern European atmosphere (part of the film is set in Budapest, and the song “The Girl with the Pearl Hair” is heard during a scene in Hungary) adds a lot to the film, the story isn’t much different from what we’ve seen a hundred times before, whether it’s fiction or biopic.
Rather of depicting the more complex features of the actual Skotarczak in his fiction, Kawulski emphasizes these known elements in order to lure in as many lovers of these films as possible with his classic gangster movie schematics.
Nikos’ latest girlfriends are similarly predictable: money-hungry, unfaithful wife Halina (Magdalena Lamparska), mysterious seductress Milena (Agnieszka Grochowska), and sex-addicted, drug-addicted Nikita (Julia Wieniawa-Narkiewicz). This is especially disheartening since each of the four performers has a distinct charm and subtleties in their emotions. I wish the director had given them more to do.
Is it worth it to watch three gangster stories in a row?
Despite the setting, age, and mood, this is hardly the Eastern European gangster picture that will one day be compared to Scorsese’s, Brian De Palma’s, Francis Ford Coppola’s, Sergio Leone’s, or other well-known Hollywood filmmakers’ genre flicks. The three-hour running time is a little lengthy, and if you don’t want to get lost in it, you should watch it in one sitting since it is rather complicated – which is really a good thing here. Despite the title’love,’ anybody who is really interested in how the most renowned Polish mobster created his empire during the communist period will not be disappointed by this lengthy but significant gangster epic.
