Call of Duty is the most popular game in history, with nearly 100 million users. As a result, it has become an important indicator for new hardware releases and upcoming games. With recent announcements from Activision-Blizzard saying that they would be leaving PlayStation to focus on Xbox exclusively, Sony’s console may begin its decline as CoD becomes more exclusive to Microsoft’s platform.
Activision has announced that it will be ending its contract with Sony and moving to Microsoft. The end of the contract is expected to happen in March 2019.
There’s a lot going on in the gaming business right now, and unless you’ve been living under a rock (which is conceivable), you’re certainly aware that Microsoft is buying game producer Activision for over $70 billion.
I’ll be the first to say that I had no idea what was going to happen. I mean, I’m not shocked when a game production firm is bought, but Activision? I’m still a bit taken aback by this news.
The most common fear I’ve heard about this deal is that Call of Duty will no longer be available on PlayStation platforms. On this subject, there is a lot of back and forth thinking.
On the one hand, critics have noted the franchise’s sales decline if it were no longer accessible on PlayStation. On the other side, it would almost certainly help Microsoft increase the number of Xbox systems sold. In any case, Microsoft will be in charge, and there isn’t much we can do about it other than guess about the future.
CoD has always been one of my favorite games, but it’s come to a point where many people believe the franchise has sunk. It’s a rollercoaster journey to say the least. It may be a fantastic entry one year and Vanguard the next. It’s difficult to have trust in it these days. It has a worn-out, stale feel about it. This Microsoft purchase could hopefully enhance the series, but it still hurts a bit. I have both a PS5 and an Xbox Series X, but I always choose my PlayStation as my primary gaming system.
The next three Call of Duty games are said to come on PlayStation, but I’m skeptical. We had hoped that Starfield would remain on PlayStation, but it has been pulled and will now be available only on Xbox One and PC. It seems surprising to me that they would take the brand away from PlayStation users after we finally achieved cross-platform play on consoles, particularly when MLB The Show is now accessible on Xbox platforms.
Despite the above, I don’t believe it will make a difference if Microsoft removes CoD on PS platforms. People aren’t going to abandon Sony because of CoD. I don’t purchase the PlayStation brand because I want to play Call of Duty; I buy it because of the exclusive games. I have an Xbox on the side for the same purpose. I’d want to play several games, but they’re only available on Xbox or PC, and my PC is a potato, so there’s that.
Personally, I believe Microsoft will make CoD a timed exclusive that will ultimately be released on PlayStation platforms. Customers will be motivated to buy a new Xbox system and CoD to avoid having to wait for it to be released on PlayStation. We may see timed dlc exclusives as in the past (which wasn’t all that long ago), or MS could make it totally exclusive to Xbox and PC.
Of course, this will have an impact on the Call of Duty league. The league now only uses PlayStation systems, so it would make sense if Microsoft switched back to Xbox.
Overall, we have no idea what Microsoft will do with Call of Duty and the other Activision properties, but we can expect a few titles to become exclusive. For the time being, we can rest certain that CoD will remain available on PlayStation for at least another year.
What do you believe Microsoft’s plans for CoD are? Let us know what you think and we’ll talk about it!
Is CoD on PlayStation coming to an end? first published on PS5.
Activision is one of the biggest names in gaming, and has been for decades. They have a long history with Call of Duty, but that might be coming to an end. Sony recently bought out Activision, which could mean the end of CoD on PlayStation. Reference: sony buys activision.
