Return to Monkey Island: Sequel to Legendary LucasArts Series Releasing This Year from Original Writer-Director Ron Gilbert

It’s been 15 years since the last Monkey Island game, but that doesn’t mean fans have given up hope of a follow-up. The return of Ron Gilbert and his team is underway with an official announcement to be made later this year.

The “return to monkey island” is a sequel to the legendary LucasArts series that will be releasing this year from original writer-director Ron Gilbert. The game will be available for PC, Mac, and Linux.

One of the most popular point-and-click series has returned. Return to Monkey Island, the sixth entry of the legendary series based on the exploits of pirate Guybrush Threepwood and his struggles against his arch-nemesis, LeChuck, an evil, undead pirate, was announced today by Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games, and Terrible Toybox.

Return to Monkey Island is a direct sequel to 1991’s Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, but what’s really cool about it is that original writer-director Ron Gilbert, as well as original co-writer Dave Grossman and LucasArts composers Michael Land, Michael McConnell, and Clint Bajakian, are all returning. The game will be launched this year, according to a teaser clip.

We don’t know much about the game beyond what’s in the brief teaser trailer above, but we do have a 2013 blog post from Gilbert outlining his plans for a new game in the series. He said at the time that he wanted it to be “a throwback game that harkens back to Monkey Island 1 and 2,” and that he would expressly disregard the events of the series after the second – and considering that this game follows LeChuck’s Revenge, it seems he may have achieved his goal.

Other ideas he had at the time included making it “a hardcore adventure game” with no tutorials, hint systems, “pansy-assed puzzles or appealing to the mass-market or modernizing,” and so on. He also wanted vintage art powered by current technology (to enable the team to do what Lucasarts couldn’t in the 1990s), a “full-on inventory,” a physical release, dialog puzzles, and no verbs used for commands. He has said that, among other things, he would want to recreate the originals’ SCUMM engine.
