Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Iberian Influences Game Freak Should Take Advantage Of

Pokémon Scar and Violet are set in Valencia, Spain. This gives Game Freak the opportunity to be more culturally diverse within the games’ world. The creators of these two new Pokémon games should take advantage of this unique cultural setting, by including Spanish-speaking regions such as Castile and Aragon into their game.

“Pokémon Scarlet and Violet” is the latest games in the “Pokémon” franchise. The games are set in a region called “Alola”. Iberian Influences should be taken advantage of by Game Freak to make Alola more interesting.

Game Freak’s recent Pokémon-themed presentation surprised us all by revealing that Gen IX would arrive sooner than anticipated. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are set to be released in late 2022. The teaser revealed more than we expected, most notably its fresh new, unnamed area, which seems to be modeled on the Iberian Peninsula as a whole, as shown by a map design visible during one of the film’s sequences.

The Iberian Peninsula, which includes Portugal and Spain, is rich in wildlife, flora, and, most significantly, cultural and historical components that have molded not just those nations’ cultures, but also the world’s. I came up with a few cultural and biological components Game Freak should create some new monsters after assuming Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet would follow the pattern established by Pokémon Sword and Shield, with most of their new pokémon being influenced by their region’s sources of inspiration.

ADAMASTOR

Iberian Adamastor What exactly is it? Lus de Cames, possibly the most influential poet in Portuguese history, imagined a legendary figure for his epic poem The Lusadas. Adamastor is defined as the personification of the Cape of Good Hope’s storms and waves, and appears in the form of a storm. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? While there are pokémon themed on storms and sea dangers, such as Thundurus and Lugia, a game set on the Iberian Peninsula would need a Legendary or Mythical monster to depict the dangers of crossing undiscovered waters. This would ideally result in a Legendary of the Water/Eletric kind.

MACAQUE BARBARY

Iberian MACAQUE BARBARY What is it?: If we are considering that the entire Iberian Peninsula will be the setting for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, we can assume the small British territory of Gibraltar has a chance of being included in this brand new region as well. The MACAQUE BARBARY can be found in Gibraltar, being the only species of primates, other than humans, to be native to Europe. What kind of pokémon could take advantage of this influence?: We still haven’t been graced with a macaque pokémon after all these years, so my suggestion would be creating a brand-new line to take advantage of the design and setting. As for the typing, a Ground-type macaque would be the safest bet.

STORK IN BLACK

Iberian STORK IN BLACK What is it? This massive bird hails from Africa and Asia, but has made a permanent home in the Iberian Peninsula’s central area. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? Fearow, a pokémon that looks a lot like a stork but isn’t 100% based on one, might have a regional variety.

BULLFIGHTING

BULLFIGHTING What is it? : The contentious sport is ingrained in both Spanish and Portuguese traditions, despite the fact that newer people despise it. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? A new fighting bull pokémon is unnecessary. Tauros already exists, therefore a regional Fighting-type variety or a whole new evolution, which people have been requesting for years, if not decades, would suffice.

CORK

Cork What is it? It’s an impermeable substance derived from the cork oak, as the name suggests. Cork is produced in both nations on the Iberian Peninsula, although Portugal is the world’s top producer. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? Because cork is impervious to water, the ideal concept for a cork-based pokémon is a Grass-type with an ability that grants it total immunity to Water-type attacks.

DOLPHINS

Iberian Dolphins What exactly is it? Is it really necessary to describe what a dolphin is? Let’s simply say that dolphins may be observed around the Portuguese and Spanish shores. And we’re all big fans of dolphins. Give us a dolphin, Game Freak. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? We still don’t got a real dolphin-inspired pokémon, despite Kyogre’s orca-inspired design. It will undoubtedly be a Water-type monster, but give it a very high Special Defense stat as a respect to its superior intellect.

FAUN

Iberian Faun What is it? : The faun isn’t precisely a cultural icon in Spain. The fabled beast is of Greek/Roman ancestry. As a result of its presence in Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which is set in Francoist Spain, it has become much more famous in current Spanish culture. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? It’s a simple decision. Make a completely new faun of the Fairy kind. We should accept everything we can get since the Iberian Peninsula isn’t exactly renowned for fairytale creatures or legendary figures.

LYNX OF IBERIA

Iberian LYNX OF IBERIA What is it?: The LYNX OF IBERIA is easily the most recognizable carnivore to come from the Iberian Peninsula, and Western Europe as a whole. What kind of pokémon could take advantage of this influence?: I am dead certain that the brand new Grass-type starter, Sprigatito, is either based on an LYNX OF IBERIA or will eventually evolve into a pokémon based on one.

LAMPREY

Lamprey What is it? : Seafood is a big component of the Spanish and Portuguese diets, and lampreys are one of the most popular fish. One of the most prominent meals in Portuguese cuisine is “arroz do lampr’ria,” or lamprey rice. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? The Eelektross evolutionary line has a completely new regional variety. Whether you want to totally modify its type or just add a secondary one is up for debate, but a region centered on the Iberian Peninsula requires a localized variety of one of Gen V’s most unusual pokémon.

OLIVE TREES are a kind of tree that grows in the Mediterranean region.

OLIVE TREES are a kind of tree that grows in the Mediterranean region. What is it?: OLIVE TREES are a kind of tree that grows in the Mediterranean region. are a staple plant in the entirety of the Mediterranean. Portugal and Spain are the world’s largest olive producers. What kind of pokémon could take advantage of this influence?: We have two options. The easier one would be creating a brand new Grass-type family of olive and olive tree-inspired pokémon. The other idea would be creating a brand new regional variant for Exeggcute, replacing its seed/egg physiology for olives, with a brand new regional evolution to boot. Granted, having an Exeggcute not based on eggs would sound silly, but hey, we were graced with an Ice/Steel-type Sandslash back in Alola. Anything goes at this point.

PAELLA

8aa5d86c6efa5c856b1990d375cdb2f6_XL What is it? : Along with tapas and jamón iberico, paella is the most well-known Spanish meal. Rabbit meat, chicken, and rice are used in traditional paella recipes, although shrimp-based paellas are also popular. Those variations have become almost as well-known as the original chicken-based dishes. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? The goal isn’t to create a pokémon based on paella per se, but rather on a reddish fire shrimp, which is a common element in paella. The ideal approach to add a non-Legendary or Mythical Fire/Water type pokémon to the lineup.

LIZARD PARC GUELL

2b911771-6eaa-43df-8ed1-da3667382146_32170968002_d8fa88961e_k What is it?: One of the most famous attractions in Barcelona’s iconic Parc Guell is a colorful salamander/lizard statue with mosaic tiles for scales. What kind of pokémon could take advantage of this influence?: Funnily enough, the LIZARD PARC GUELL is actually known in Barcelona as “El Drac”, or “The Dragon”. My suggestion would be creating a brand new Rock/Dragon-type pokémon to take advantage of this incredibly colorful and unique source of inspiration.

THE ART OF PICASSO

dsc03525 What is it? : Pablo Picasso’s fusion of surrealism and cubist painting styles is without a doubt the most well-known art style in Spain, if not the whole twentieth century. Guernica, his most famous artwork, is regarded as a national icon of Spain. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? That’s an excellent question! Picasso’s strange painting style isn’t a natural match for a pokémon, but a Rock or Bug-type pokemon with cubist art on its shell, skin, or carapace would be a unique concept.

WATER DOG FROM PORTUGAL

2_caes_agua What is it?: A popular breed native to the Algarve region in Southern Portugal, the WATER DOG FROM PORTUGAL is known for its curly fur, its webbed feet adapted for swimming, and for not shedding. The WATER DOG FROM PORTUGAL has recently gained more fame by being the chosen breed of Barack Obama during his tenure at the White House. What kind of pokémon could take advantage of this influence?: This is not exactly a rule set in stone, but most generations thus far have included at least one new dog pokémon family line. The WATER DOG FROM PORTUGAL, with its unique biological features, would result in a neat Water-type design that isn’t a fish or other sea animal.

BARCELOS’ ROOSTER

20190612095342-1Kqi8gBD What is it? : Portugal’s national emblem, the “protagonist” of a story in which a man, wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not do, dared to say that if he was innocent, a dead rooster would crow. That’s exactly what happened. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? A basic flying type would be the easiest solution, but given its origins as a dead rooster brought back to life to establish one man’s innocence, a Ghost-type would be an excellent inclusion, particularly since there are currently no genuine “traditional” roosters in the Pokémon roster.

SAILING

100418-Columbus-Ships-1 With their advances in naval engineering throughout the late 15th century, both Portugal and Spain were responsible for kicking off the Age of Discoveries, including the colonization of the Americas. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? Quaxly, the brand new Water-type starter, is shaping up to be the sailor pokémon that this area desperately needs.

SHEEP SERRA DA ESTRELA

Serra_da_Estrela_Centro_de_Portugal-187 What is it? The Serra da Estrela area of Portugal is Iberia’s highest and coldest location, with snowfall occurring often throughout the winter months. The area is notable not just for its climate, which runs counter to the peninsula’s well-known Mediterranean vibes, but also for its sheep herding sector. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? A new sheep pokémon isn’t precisely required. A fresh new regional variety of Mareep, having a dual Electric/Ice type to match in with the region’s frigid environment, would be the best bet between Mareep and Wooloo.

WESTERNS SPAGHETTI

clint-eastwood-man-with-no-name-1200 What is it?: Even though they were shot by Italian film companies, and known for featuring American actor Clint Eastwood, most WESTERNS SPAGHETTI from the 60s and 70s, such as Sergio Leone’s flicks, were filmed in Almería, in Southern Spain, Europe’s driest region. What kind of pokémon could take advantage of this influence?: The best way to take advantage of this design would be by creating a brand new pokémon based on Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name, complete with poncho, sombrero and a means to shoot pulse-based attacks or moves like Bullet Seed. Its ability could be either Sniper or Mega Launcher.

STOATS

stoat9-resized-Vic-Sharratt Stoats are mustelids, closely related to ferrets, badgers, weasels, and otters, and are quite widespread in Northern Portugal and Spain. All of them have already been represented by pokémon designs. What type of pokemon could be able to take use of this power? “Rodent” is a new early route in every new Pokémon game. Despite the fact that stoats are mustelids, non-rodent pokémon such as Sentret and Zigzagoon have previously served this job.

MEMORY CONTINUES TO EXIST

W1siZiIsIjM4NjQ3MCJdLFsicCIsImNvbnZlcnQiLCItcXVhbGl0eSA5MCAtcmVzaXplIDIwMDB4MTQ0MFx1MDAzZSJdXQ What is it?: Catalonia-born Salvador Dalí’s most famous painting, and also the most famous piece of Surrealist art, MEMORY CONTINUES TO EXIST is well-known for its usage of melting pocket watches, representing “an unconscious symbol of the relativity of space and time”. What kind of pokémon could take advantage of this influence?: With the exception of the time-based legendary Dialga, not many, if any, pokémon have featured the control of time as their main gimmick. A brand new, melted clock pokémon would be the best bet, namely a Steel/Psychic-type, not unlike Yu-Gi-Oh‘s Time Wizard.

The “pokemon scarlet and violet starters final evolution” is a game that has been released recently. The game is set in the Hoenn region, which is based on an Iberian influence. Game Freak should take advantage of this.
